Beyond the leadership there has been plenty of other work to do in the last two weeks, as an MP and a minister.
I've visited 12 schools in that time. This included celebrating the re-appointment of Kelly Holmes as School Sports Champion at Barking Abbey School in London. Kelly is working very
hard up and down the country motivating youngsters to be more active, do more sport and be more motivated at school. She had a great personality and is hugely popular wherever she
goes.
But best school visit of all was opening Wyvern School in Weymouth.
This is a magnificent new special school that will make a massive difference to the children who previously had to endure cramped inappropriate conditions on the other side of town. They are
now together on a campus with Wey Valley and St. Nicholas & St. Lawrence schools, and it it is great how they all can mix together. These children have the most serious
learning difficulties and, given that Ofsted have found the pupils with special educational need do best when educated in their own provision but in a mainstream setting, I am
delighted to see them given such an excellent new school. Government money well spent!
I also popped in to Wey Valley to be interviewed by students doing a project on how Weymouth and Portland make the most of the Olympics - a subject very close to my heart.
