Hopefully today will go down as an historic day in democratising Parliament. I was delighted with the Commons votes to reform the House of Lords.
I have always been in favour of an elected second chamber and campaigned for it in the last Parliament. When the Labour Party was founded it was one of the original aims to remove the
hereditary peers from the Lords. Finally the elected House of Commons has voted with a large majority for such a move.
Naturally there is a lot more work to be done in persuading the Lords to effectively abolish themselves and no doubt some compromises to be done. But I think a clear signal has been
sent.
