Yesterday I was given the shocking news that Jim Cronin died on Saturday. Over the last six years I got to know Jim, and his wife Alison, well. They became good friends and I am very sad and
shaken by the news.
Jim was an extraordinary and passionate man. With Alison, he built Monkeyworld into Dorset's biggest tourist attraction, a major employer, the basis of one of the most watched TV programmes
on satellite TV, and the biggest primate rescue center in Europe. He was a major figure internationally in wildlife conservation, as I discovered when I was Biodiversity minister. For
example, Monkeyworld is now Europe's nursery for Orangutans , one of the world's most endangered species.
His conservation work had led to a similar center being established in Taiwan and he has recently been doing exciting work in Vietnam. He did all of this without public money but by also
being an astute manager of the park in Dorset whose profits were ploughed back into conservation.
I will greatly miss his friendship, he was an avid reader of newspapers and teased me about politics whenever we met. My heart goes out to all of the great staff at Monkeyworld and especially
to Alison. She has pledged to continue and develop his work as the best legacy Jim can have.
