Last night was the vote on Trident. This is a finely balanced decision because the nature of the security threat is so uncertain at the moment and the cost is so large. That was one reason why I consulted the hundreds of constituents on my consultation panel to get their view.

Their response reflected the difficulty of this decision. It was not overwhelming but around 60% voted in favour of renewal. Given that there are plenty of jobs locally in submarine development I expected some support but nevertheless the result was informative.

On balance I think that becuase of the uncertain nature of the threat we have no choice, as long as we continue to pursue multilateral disarmament.
